Abstract:- Background: Dyslipidaemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, which can be identified and managed appropriately.
Aim: The aim of the study is to assess the pattern of dyslipidaemia among UDUS students.
Materials and methods: It is a snapshot study among students of UDUS. A total of 100 apparently healthy students were involved in the study. Questionnaires were administered; data obtained were age, gender, height, weight, income, financial dependency, physical activity, stimulant usage and alcohol consumption. Fasting serum samples were collected to determine serum lipids levels. The samples were analysed using enzymatic colorimetric method of lipids estimation. Of the 100 participants, there are 64 males and 36 females, with age range of 18-40 years.
Results: The result obtained from the study shows mean±SD of TC (5.12 ± 0.93) mmol/L, HDL-C (1.13 ± 0.34) mmol/L, LDL-C (3.34 ± 0.94) mmol/L, TG (1.42 ± 0.33) mmol/L and AIX (5.15 ± 2.56). Mean value of HDL-C is significantly lower than the value of the target reference population and the mean value of TG is significantly lower while mean values of TC, LDL-C and TG are not significantly different from the value of the target population reference. The pattern of dyslipidaemia in prevalence was TC (55%), HDL-C (25%), LDL-C (41%), TG (17%), and that of AIX (33%). Elevated TC was the most common form dyslipidaemia in this study while TGs were the least.
